This opening To the Life

- M. Maureen Killoran

Enough. These few words are enough.
If not these words, this breath.
If not this breath, this sitting here.

This opening to the life
we have refused
again and again until now. (David Whyte)

It's a nice little poem, telling me to trust the sun to rise and the world to run without my control. Heaven knows I need to hear it. It's a nice little poem, after all.

The it comes, the second stanza. . . I read on, innocently. . . "This opening too the life we have refused." . . . Oops. It's talking about the opportunities I've been too timid to take . . . the truths I've been unwilling to face . . . the beauty I have stubbornly been too busy to see.

"This opening to the life/ we have refused/ again and again/ until now . . . " There it is, the promise of a chance to start again . . . a point at which I (you too!) can say, "Now this time, I'm gong to open my heart. This time I'm going to forgive. I'm going to accept what cannot be changed. I'm going to let myself feel . . . and part of what I'm going to feel is joy."

Maybe it's not coincidental that I take this poem to heart now, as all around us the world is opening up, bursting into the fullness of spring. Maybe now is the season for you, too, to "sit there," to open yourself to whatever it is in your life that you have, until now, chosen to refuse. May the spirit of renewal be yours in this season of Easter and Spring.
